The gate Portara, was part of the temple of Apollo, located in islet of Palatia which connects with the city by a narrow strip of land. The temple of Apollo, dates back to the 6th century. B.C. was built by the tyrant Lygdami, but remained unfinished because of the fall of tyranny.


A sacred place of the Aegean with uninterrupted life and function from the 14th century B.C. up to our times. It is the cradle of the Ionic order of the monumental Greek architecture.

The sancturay of Iria has been located (1982), investigated (1986-1996) and presented to the public (1992-1996) by the University of Athens in collaboration with the Polytechnical School of Munich, with the financial support of both Univesities as well as the Ministry of Culture (research) and the Ministry of Aegean (presentation).

Kouros of Apollo

Kouros of Apollo dating back to the 6th century BC has a length of about 10 meters and it is assumed to represent the god Dionysus. Kouros is located at the entrance of an old quarry near the entrance of the village. Reason of its size, from very near the kouros looks like a large stone, for this reason the visitor to perceive the outline of the statue should be removed just by kouros.

Kouros of Melanes

Kouros Melanon located in Flerio outside the village of Melana Kouros is one of the finest examples of the art of Naxos. It has a length of 6 meters and has made ​​around 570 BC This is the unfinished statue of a teenager who is "lying" in an orchard and a leg is broken. Nearby is the ancient quarry and speculated that his foot broke during transportation of the statue.
