The gate Portara, was part of the temple of Apollo, located in islet of Palatia which connects with the city by a narrow strip of land. The temple of Apollo, dates back to the 6th century. B.C. was built by the tyrant Lygdami, but remained unfinished because of the fall of tyranny.

The temple was Ionic, had a length 59 meters and width of 28 meters. The entrance to the temple was on the west side, a fact uncommon for temples of this type. From the geometric era was in place an outdoor temple shrine which was a simple shrine with altar. Today from the Temple, only the foundations remain and the huge gate of the temple, known to locals as Portara. It consists of four pieces of marble weighing tens of tons which probably forced the Venetians to not use it in the construction of the Castle of Chora, in contrast to what happened with the rest of the church.
At the threshold of the temple, in front of the gate, there were 4-5 steps above the floor level, which is probably associated with the ritual of Apollo Delios.

The temple of Apollo, was converted into a Christian church in the type of basilica in the 5th or 6th century. Around the church developed settlement that survived until the Frankish conquest.

According to mythology, in island palaces Theseus abandoned Ariadne from where abducted her and married god Dionysus with his followers. This myth has inspired artists from around the world, who in their works made famous Naxos worldwide. Here and celebrated the first "Dionysia".
